It was a fine day for a Rotary meeting on Oct. 16, 2018, at the Holiday Inn.

President Allison opened the meeting with God Bless America and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Nikki Sobkowski led us in a thoughtful Gratitude and Reflection moment.

Randy Kamps introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.  As a reminder, when introducing your guest PLEASE let the last thing you say about them be their name!!! It makes it easier for us to appropriately say hello!

Dale Chilcote introduced our newest Rotarian Mike Jager. Mike moved here in 2008 with his family. He adds Rotary to his long list of community involvement! Welcome, Mike!

Christopher Cox introduced our Students of the Week from Traverse City Christian. Grace Phelps has been involved with a plethora of activities at TC Christian and holds a black belt Taekwondo. Her goal is to be an elementary teacher and a positive influence on young lives.

Emily Bluck is excited to be partaking in a mission trip to Jamaica next month. She also has a busy schedule of service and athletic activities and hopes to earn a degree in political science.

President Allison called a special meeting of the Rotary Club of Traverse in accordance with the bylaws. Proposed officers for the Board of Directors will serve from July 2019 – June 2021. Six Rotarians are on the ballot to fill three board positions. Elections will be on Oct. 30. The slate of candidates includes, Tony Anderson, Jennifer Casey, Greg Luyt, Lisa Pointe, Trevor Tkach, and Sid VanSlyke. To fill the position of president-elect (serving for the 2020-2021 Rotary year) is Mack Beers (hmmm…..two Beers as president within two years……… I like it!)

President Allison announced that we are bringing back the paper club directory book!

Bob Stow announced that the kazoos used during last week’s meeting are not gifts or tokens of appreciation for participating in last week’s “kazoo-a-long”. Please return so they can be sanitized for the next round. (You can do it discreetly and no one is judging you!) Thank you!

John Hall provided a Rotary Charities update. The grant cycle for 2018-2019 is underway.  Of the 29 grants that have been submitted, 20 have been accepted into the next phase of review. Stacy Foster has contacted those reviewing the grants. If you would like to take part in the grant reviews, please contact Stacy.

Al Bonney has a Polio video of “The World’s Children” which will now be shown next week as the gods of technology decided to not cooperate today.

Steve Wade announced our speaker today, esteemed local filmmaker extraordinaire Rich Brauer of Brauer Productions. He talked of one of his latest films Dogman 2 Wrath of the Litter

Rich gave us the low down on the inner workings of filmmaking. Here’s how it works:

• Clear the title of the film – requires legal stuff

• Copyright the screenplay – create a paper trail

• Declaration of some kind (Rich went kinda fast here)

• Get an LLC and then an IRS number

• Send screenplay to LA to check copyright infringement (Note: no filming has actually occurred yet)

• Develop a marketing plan

• Casting

• Develop Talent Deal Memos

• Get with the Screen Actor’s Guild

• Figure out each scene number with the amount of time to film and determine the number of hours to make the movie

• Develop a schedule for eating, rehearsal and create a blueprint for production

• Shooting schedule – looks like a bowling score care

• Develop Cast – day out schedule

• Location and scenes need to be figured out

• Call Sheet Daily – with updated info – it’s standard in “The Biz”

• Develop Dogman creatures – prototype

• American Human Association needs to invited to the party if any animals are used in filming – this goes for perch as well.

• Product placement – you know things like Shorts Beer that’s included in a scene

• Scripts are organized via “good” and “no good” takes

Hmmm…..makes our Rotary Show seem like child’s play – even though we know it isn’t!

Rich also discussed the Project Cinema MI project which allows students to develop shorts while working with a mentor. A recent film of “Sheets in the Sand” has been written and filmed locally and utilized local interns. Rich hopes for a screening in late January.

In accordance with Article II, Section 2 of the Bylaws, I shall now call to order a special meeting of the corporate membership of the Rotary Club of Traverse City.  Mr. Secretary, is there a quorum? Yes

The purpose of this meeting is to announce the slate of proposed officer and board members and take nominations from the floor for three board seats, and President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Traverse City for the 2019-2020 Rotary year. Elections will be held during the Annual Meeting of the Rotary Club on Tuesday, October 30, 2018.

In accordance with the bylaws, the Board of Directors is made up of eleven Rotarians:  six directors and five officers, all of whom except the Treasurer are elected by the general

membership.  An elected Director serves a two-year term.  Each year we elect three new Directors. The President-Elect serves a one-year term and shall succeed to the office of President for the ensuing year.

Nominees from the floor must be:

• A member in good standing of the Rotary Club of Traverse City

• Agree to serve if elected

• Agree to fulfill the responsibilities of the office

After careful consideration of the eligible members, in preparation for the

election, and in accordance with the bylaws of the Rotary Club of Traverse City, the Nominating Committee presents the following slate of candidates for election:

In addition to the slate of candidates just announced, are there any nominations from the floor for the board of directors? No nominations from the floor.
