Club Meeting Notes, October 9, 2018

It was a beautiful October 9th day for the Best Rotary Club in the World to meet as interpreted by Ramona Pleva!
President Awesome Allison did the honors of ringing the meeting bell.
God Bless America was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance followed by our Thoughts of Gratitude and Reflection by Lee Olewinski.
Ramona Pleva led us in “Oh When the Saints go Marching In” (only 28 weeks away from the 2019 Rotary Show!) and a few spirited Rotarians embraced the kazoos on the tables courtesy of the super Fun Committee!
President-elect Homey Nye introduced visiting Rotarians and guests, which included his beautiful wife Becky!
President Awesome introduced not one but TWO new Rotarians today! (She’s such an overachiever!!) Jean Derenzy is the CEO of the DDA. Jean is a native of Traverse City, a graduate of NMC and CMU (Fire Up Chips!) Maureen Michaels is apart of guest services at Interlochen Arts Academy and comes with a plethora of marketing experience! Welcome to our newest Rotarians! We look forward to serving with you.
President Awesome thanked Regina Jager for enhancing our awareness that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month with pink lemonade and pink ribbon table décor. President Awesome recommended that we all get checked…… and that’s all I’ll say about that.
Al Bonney stepped up to the mic to provide impressive polio stats!
  • 1988 Global Polio eradication began
  • 1994 the Americas were deemed polio-free
  • 2000 Polio eradicated in the West Pacific
  • 2011 Rotary and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined forces for a combined billion dollars to eradicate polio
  • 2014 India declared polio-free (and that was a tough one to get! WHEW!)
  • 3 countries remain not polio-free: Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
  • 193 countries are polio-free
  • 19 polio cases year to date

Kory Hansen introduced Deb Allen as our program presenter today. Deb is the Foundation Executive Director at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
 
Deb discussed the opening of a PACE program near you! PACE stands for Program of All-inclusive Care for the elderly. The PACE program allows our seniors who need assistance with activities of daily living and healthcare services. These services allow for improved coordination of care and preventative care including mental and spiritual counseling services. With a focus on illness prevention, the program will save Medicare and Medicaid dollars along with unnecessary hospital visits.  The PACE program offers an alternative to skilled nursing care.
The demand for such services will escalate as the boomer generation ages, known as the “silver tsunami”.  Currently Michigan has one of the fastest growing silver tsunami populations in the country. In Michigan, we have a caregiver crisis and more deaths than births in our region. The PACE program will help address these needs.
The local PACE program will service seven surrounding counties. This does provide a transportation challenge due to the expansiveness of the area and being a rural population, but ongoing solutions are being sought out.
Medicare and Medicaid will pay for a portion of participants care, allowing for the sustainability of the program.  The PACE program in the Grand Traverse area is unique from others around the country in that is doesn’t have equity partners. A capital campaign has been raising funds for the purchase and improvements of the PACE home on Garfield along with funding the operations.
The PACE program has a projected opening of Spring 2019. Thanks to Kory and Deb for an awesome program that will hugely benefit our communities!

Dear Club President and Fellow Rotarian:
 
The purpose of this correspondence is to announce our trip to India to participate in the late January/early February 2019 polio National Immunization Days (NID) activities.  This trip offers you and the Rotarians in your club and District an extraordinary opportunity to have an experience of a lifetime.  Attached is a document that provides specific information about the trip, including a means of joining the program. Please feel free to share this information with the Rotarians and clubs in your District as soon as possible as we have a limited amount of space and expect this trip to be filled within the next week or two.
 
In 2015, India was declared polio-free.  In past years, India would organize three or four NID dates.  However, in 2019, there is only one NID program.  Therefore, we expect this may be one of the last opportunities you will have to join a trip to India to participate in polio NID activities.
 
The following summarizes the key trip information:
 
Our program will travel to Delhi, India, where we will participate in the polio NID activities and attend other related Rotary events.  This trip also includes travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur to visit the famous Rotary Jaipur Limb factory, and enjoy this extraordinary city.
 
Date of Departure:                         Friday, January 25, 2019
Date of Return:                               Tuesday, February 5, 2019
 
Per Person Cost, based on double occupancy:  $2,499.  This price does not include international, roundtrip airfare or Indian visa fees.  However, it does include hotels, transfers, Rotary events, participation in the NID activities, most meals, sightseeing, English speaking guide and other items as stated in the attached document.  Participants are free to secure their own air reservations using their frequent flyer mileage, or individual purchase.  Howard Tours will be happy to help you purchase airline tickets, which can be requested on the trip application.
 
This group will be limited to approximately 35 people, and confirmation in the program will be on a first come, first served basis.  To join us, please complete and sign the application on page five of the attached document.  If you, or people from your club are going to join us, we suggest immediate action.  Over the last two years, this program sold out in less than two weeks.

Match ~ Deadline December 1, 2018

In 1999, Rotary Charities donated $2.5 million to the Community Foundation to establish the Rotary Endowment. The Endowment connects the shared work of Rotary Charities and the Community Foundation of promoting philanthropy to enrich the quality of life in our region. Today, the Rotary Endowment provides an opportunity for individual Rotarians and local Rotary Clubs to have their philanthropic support matched by the Community Foundation.

The partnership between the Community Foundation and Rotary Charities is reflective of the quality of philanthropic intent and integrity that makes this a wonderful place to live, work, and give.

Match forms need to be signed by you and the non-profit and turned in to the Rotary office by December 1st deadline.
