SIGH OF THE TIMES
Whoa. Did you guys feel that? Looks like Bob Dylan was right. The times they did a-change.
Chris Thomas of Benzie Sunrise Rotary confirmed that. We live in a world right now where adequate resources exist to create community food security so that all of us can enjoy individual food security. All of us. Today. Sigh.
The resources exist (“no farmer wants his food to go to waste”), and the remaining solution is to get it into the hands of those who need it. Thomas claims that all that is needed is to “work together”. To that end, a food security commission has been formed, and a food access plan developed. Access, not lack, is the last piece of the puzzle. “Healthy Harvest Partnership” will get food into the hands of those in need – food that would otherwise go to waste. Sigh.
Yep, the times they did a-change. Hunger is being wiped out, polio is being eradicated, and the whole world is in our back yard. TC West students Clayton Burnheimer and Madison Burnett each have fond memories (at 18 years old!) of The Netherlands, and Madison has even volunteered in Kenya. I just pulled up the weather forecast for Monte Carlo to check up on the tennis tournament there. (72o, by the way – sigh!)
Seems like the whole club sighed when Homer Nye gave thanks for the beautiful, beautiful spring day we saw on Tuesday, but, of course, it was a sigh of contentment, not despair. Our lives are so blessed, so full, so easy. I’m not sure we really do want to “Bring Back Those Good Old Days” like we sang!
The times they have a-changed. Our old road has rapidly aged. But, as Rotarians, we never have to worry about “getting out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand”, as Dylan crooned. Shoot, like Chris Thomas and the Healthy Harvest Partnership, we Rotarians are the ones who built most of those new roads!
And that’s the final sigh.
