Program Introduction:  Steve Wade- Speaker Dr. Elizabeth Del Buono, MD. – Surgical Pathologist – Munson medical Center.

Dr. Lisa Del Buono represents “Citizens’ Climate Lobby”- Northern Michigan Chapter.  Lisa’s presentation included the history and diversity of climate change and its affect on the environment and resulting health hazard; especially its effect on the young and old population.

      Dr. Del Buono used a well-organized power-point presentation that informed us about the effects of climate change which has been occurring for over 1 million years.  The big problem of the changing climate and our current challenge is the proliferation of the burning of fossil fuels and CO2 emission which traps heat and results in raising CO2 levels.  For example, in 2013 measurement of CO2 = 400 parts/million.  It is now expected to rise to 600 parts/million within 4 years.  This human heat issue affects cardio & vascular health.  According to Dr. Del Buono, more than half of all medical doctors agree on the hazards of continuing the current CO2 corruption of the environment.  The Ozone at ground level is also being compromised.  

      Dr. Del Buono and her organization are proposing a major reduction in the use of fossil fuels and other low carbon emissions.  The primary reduction can be achieved by implementing carbon-based fuel tax of $15.00/ton of CO2 emissions and would increase at least $10.00/ton each year.  The idea is to encourage investment and innovation in renewable energy and energy efficiency.  The goal is a 90% reduction in 1990 emission levels by 2050.  This economic solution would benefit American households on an equitable basis.  Sixty-Six % of all households would break even or receive more in their dividend check than they would pay for the increased cost of energy.
