Club Meeting Notes, June 18, 2019
It was President “Awesome” Allison’s (Beers) last official meeting before the official change of leadership next week that she called to order this Tuesday. Following our opening, Randy Kamps invoked the indigenous peoples with his words of gratitude and thoughts of reflection. Bob Stow then led a literal round of singing that turned out pretty well considering who he was working with! And Tim Nelson introduced our visiting Rotarians and our many guests.

It was a great day for Paul Harris fellows as 30 awards were announced by Kurt Rivard:

We are all asked to support and assist whenever needed our own Kathy Bussell as she struggles with personal health issues that may compromise her time and availability to you.
Kids Free Fishing Day was a terrific hit according to Chris DeGood. Lots of great help from many volunteers, both within the Rotary family and without. Thanks to Chris for and Everyone for another successful outing.

Max Anderson gratefully received a onesie (no not for him – though he would look cute in it, and I pay good money for that picture in the bulletin!) for new Baby Lillian Mae -8lbs, 12 oz and 21 in. for those who take note of these particulars.

Mike Wills introduced Stephen Burnett of Great Lakes Cruising who gave us a short presentation on the growth of the Boutique cruising industry as it expands its Adventure and Exploration Cruises into the Great Lakes making Traverse City a destination as it also cruises to Superior. Intriguing new economic growth opportunities for destination tourism to our area and other regional stops.

Amelia Burke has returned from her year in Brazil and gave us a brief recap, including showing off her new skills with the Portuguese language. She was most thankful to the Club for this amazing opportunity to further her growth as a young student.

IRONMAN COMES TO TRAVERSE CITY…NO, THE OTHER IRONMAN!

Trevor Tkatch introduced the day’s program and presenter Frank Lowery, who gave us the lowdown on the ever so challenging upcoming Ironman 70.3 Competition arriving at our front door this August! Long sold-out and ramping up to be a great new event that will show off our region right at the time when we have our greatest dip in a summer activity.

This event is expected to boost the region and downtown. Not only is the event an international series of branded competitions that draws athletes from all over, but also it has a large spectator draw and national media draw, that will serve us well at this time particular time of the year.

An event that has a 40-year track record and growing interest, Lowery was engaged by Tkatch to come view and consider TC as a possible addition in the events annual schedule. Lowery came liked the area, saw the possibilities and TC became a new addition to this year’s Ironman schedule of Competitions.

The competition draws surprisingly toward the higher end on the upscale economic segment of the demographic segment in both athletic participation and spectator engagement. And it extends well beyond the event day itself by as long as a week, especially leading up to the event day itself.

There is extensive online information about the Traverse City Race (see link below) It shows the layout of all three legs of this incredible race.

The Swimming Event: Takes place just off the open space on West Bay in a 1.2-mile course.
The Biking Event: Starts across from the Open Space out Cedar Run Road to the Dunes and back along M72 in a 56-mile loop returning to Downtown for…
The Running Even: Starts from Downtown and in two loop courses 13,1 miles around Boardman Lake

Check out the additional information online and get ready for racing of a lifetime or as Tony Stark also likes to say and as these folks have every right to say and feel when they finish this race: “YOU KNOW, IT'S MOMENTS LIKE THESE WHEN I REALIZE WHAT A SUPERHERO I AM.”
