MEETING NOTES - AUGUST 2, 2016
Today’s greeters included our own Ben Loznak, Gregory Luyt and Adam Maas along with Anne Runschke, wife of District 6290 Governor Gernot Runschke.  She was very personable and a treat to meet.
President Mike Meindertsma started the meeting by thanking Dale Chilcote for filling in for him last week in his absence.  It became suspicious when Mike drew the winning ticket in this week’s 50-50 and Dale won.  Rev. Gary Hogue gave the invocation.  He was followed by Marlene Bevan who led us in song with two old time favorites.  The first was Happy Days Are Here Again and the second was This Land Is My Land, This Land Is Your Land.  She said both were tied to politics at one point.  Why ruin two great songs by making them political? John Noonan introduced one visiting Rotarian.  There were no guests.

GUEST SPEAKER- DISTRICT 6290 GERNOT RUNSCHKE

Our speaker was introduced by President Mike Meindertsma.  We were fortunate to hear from District 6290 Governor Gernot Runschke.  Gernot married his wife, Anne, 45 years ago.  They live on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan in Grand Haven.   They have two adult children. Gernot got his degree in Architecture while in Germany.  He has been practicing architecture for the past 48 years.  He has spent a great deal of his spare time mentoring youth in both the Boy Scouts and with his church.  He joined Rotary in Grand Haven 26 years ago.  Over this period of time he has been very active in fundraising to support local and international serviced projects.  He is a member of the District Foundation Committee, the District Grants Review Board, and has served for the past 12 years as the District Peace Fellowship Chair.    His Rotary experience is vast and far reaching.

District Governor Runschke is a strong believer in the Rotary Foundation.  He encourages all Rotarians to donate each and every year.  It's the engine that drives Rotary.  He also feels Rotary needs to strongly support the local community.  This is especially true where children are concerned.  He feels out-reach programs involving children will certainly help Rotary Clubs grow in the future.  Anything we can do to help with youth education is a priority.            He said we currently have three Global scholars in our District.

District Governor Runschke said his District Conference will be held at Crystal Mountain Resort next year.  He invited everyone to come.  He said the International Convention will be held in Atlanta from June 10-14, 2017.  He concluded by saying the Rotary Foundation is celebrating its 100 year anniversary at this time, and it has raised over $3 billion.  We should all feel a great deal of pride with what the Foundation has accomplished.
