Our program for the day will be Interlochen Film & New Media and feature Michael Mittelstaedt who is the founding director of the Film & New Media Division at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Meeting recap - October 4th

  • Alan Long shared his Thoughts of Gratitude and Reflection: Thankful for "unusually friendly people", community-minded people, and many more things. 
  • Michael Caruso introduced Visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests: a wonderful prospect member from the Red Cross and the new editor for the Record-Eagle. 
  • The very talented Kingsley Trio treated us to There's a Meeting Here Tonight
  • Art Bukowski went up and down the room for Happy Bucks. 
  •  The 50/50 was $48 and was won by Marty Hall. 
  • George Powell announced the next Rotary Social event. More information below.
  • Matt McDonough updated us on the GOREC closure and shared his appreciation of the planning commission's time and efforts. He also invited everyone to the Jim Van Memorial Outing. Check out the Opportunities section. 
  • The exchange students got to go kayaking on the Boardman/Ottaway thanks to Michael Caruso. He shared how delightful they are to be around and how happy they were to have experienced something NEW. 
  • We had a speaker cancel last minute but Steve Wade managed to get the amazingly intelligent Dr. Meghan Stilwill to fill in and present on childhood trauma and its effects on adult life. 
  •  The 4-way test was led by Jeremy Harnish.

Volunteer & Social Opportunities

Second Tuesday Social | October 11 5:30 - 7:30pm 
  • Location: Mammoth Distillery within the Warehouse District. 
  • Drink: Distilled spirits (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, bourbon, and rye) to make their specialty craft cocktails along with all the classics.  They also serve an assortment of non-alcoholic drinks, as well as Bonobo red and white blend wines. 
  • Food: We'll have Jet's pizzas with the option of a food truck at Workshop Brewery.

Volunteer Workbees for Sabin Bottomlands Tree Plantings
 
  • Friday, October 28th & Saturday, October 29th 10:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Description: Help revegetate the recently exposed bottomlands of the former Sabin Dam by planting native trees and shrubs. 
  • Where: Natural Education Reserve. Meet at the Boardman River Nature Center, 1450 Cass Rd., Traverse City, MI 49685. 
  • Registration: No registration is required. Please email us with any questions!

 Featured Item - Jim Van Memorial Outing  

The annual Jim Van Memorial Outing is scheduled for Friday, October 7th | 1:00 - 4:00pm followed by a campfire. Come show your support. 
  • We have a variety of tasks including the planting of apple trees, formalizing a trailhead, removing old tree stand lumber, and blocking a pipeline access to ORVs.
  • Please arrive at the trailhead near the bridge and bring sturdy shoes and gloves. Please call Steve Largent at 231.883.9960 if you have any questions.
