Did you know that “Millennials”—those of us between the ages of 19 and 35—are now the largest generation in the U.S.?  That’s huge.
 
So understanding how these “young people” operate is a top priority for leaders who are trying to attract the best and brightest to their workplaces.
 
Mark VanderKlipp, who recently left is position as president of Corbin Design to start his own firm, says each generation, from Baby Boomers to Millennials, has different expectations and perceptions when it comes to work styles.  
 
Mark came employer that thought like a Boomer and he hired Gen Xers. Then, when he hired a millennial, he was surprised to find that the Millennial’s work style and culture preference was more like a Boomer. They wanted a little more structure and focused work time.
 
Mark said there’s reason to be excited for the Millenials in our world. Because of technology, they can meet and collaborate with others around the world easily.
He noted that it’s also interesting that they will have their lives catalogued through images on their mobile devices—something that wasn’t available when he was growing up.
 
So what are Millennials looking for in a professional environment?
 
Mark says Millennials seek experiences and opportunities to collaborate.
They are both globally and locally minded.
They seek self-selected learning opportunities and experienced mentors.
They’re confident when given responsibility and tolerant of differences.
Oh yeah, and they actually are willing to pay their dues.
