What’s Shapin’ Up North?

Shape Up North is not just your ordinary network of groups working together. It’s a region-wide collaboration of businesses, nonprofits, and health care agencies working together to help people live healthier lifestyles.

It’s an important network, too, since about two-thirds of the five-county Grand Traverse area are considered obese or overweight and a 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment showed that obesity and weight management was number one priority in the region, according to Munson’s Christi Nowak.

After working with Northsky consultant, Woody Smith, Shape Up North realized a few things: the network needed to expand its reach and broaden the type of organizations around the table.

Shape Up North’s Alyson Kass told us about a new Fruit and Vegetable Prescription pilot program, where 200 participants who have a chronic disease are offered cooking classes and farmer’s market coupons. The Shape Up North partners looked to Washtenaw County as an example and the program is administered through Munson Family Practice. Through the program, not only did fruit and vegetable consumption go up, but confidence and motivation among participants increased, too.

Shape Up North has partnered with groups in Benzie County like Grow Benzie and Paul Oliver Hospital to explore ways to really have an impact in Benzie County. They’re looking at ways to make it easier for people in the area to eat healthier, locally-grown fruits and veggies. The speakers said Grow Benzie’s Josh Stoltz is leading innovative efforts in Benzie.

Over the next year, Shape Up North will be looking for ways to collaborate with more organizations, including businesses who would like to create employee wellness programs.

Rotarians can get involved with Shape Up North by visiting their website (www.shapeupnorth.com) and sharing information with their team about local events that are related to living a healthy and active lifestyle.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF  NO ONE IN THE CLUB
LIKELY KNOWS – I actually failed my first exam in chiropractic school.  It was biochemistry and I had no idea what was going on.  I think the test was in French or Japanese! Ended up with an A in the class!!

LIFE ROLE MODEL – Since I’m trailblazing my own path, I decided to be my own role model!

MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT –  I moved 950 miles away and went back to school at the age of 41 and earned my doctor of chiropractic degree.  I did it while representing MICHIGAN like a BOSS!!

PROUDEST MOMENT -  Graduating from chiropractic school and singing the National Anthem for my graduation ceremony (totally crushed it!).

FUNNIEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU -  Well about 20 years ago I was living in New Jersey and went into NYC with some friends.  The running joke of the night was that somebody was going to get a body piercing. Well, a lady in our group proceeded to get very intoxicated and was making quite an obnoxious scene at the restaurant where we were.  I looked at my other girlfriend and said, “Where did you say that body piercing place was at?”  Before I knew it I was laying back in a chair and getting a belly piercing from a guy who had a spike coming out of his lower lip and kept calling me “girl”. (He was like, “Girl get in here.” “Girl show me your belly button.” He was a real charmer!) I no longer have the piercing, but I really took one for the team that night!

SECRET AMBITION – To teach for Life University at their chiropractic college in Rome, Italy!

IF YOU COULD BE ANYONE IN THE WORLD FOR A DAY (present or historical),  WHO WOULD THAT BE---AND  WHY? A Rotary exchange student in Italy who is fluent in Italian!  Why? Because it would just be AWESOME!

MOST FAMOUS PERSON MET – Tim Allen and cast when my dad was a guest on Home Improvement; Apollo Anton Ono and Michelle Kwan (and some other athletes) at the Salt Lake City Olympics, and Sister Madonna the “Iron Nun” at the 2006 Ironman World Championship.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE – I’m currently accepting new chiropractic patients. Hey, you asked!!
Christmas Basket Campaign
Thanks to each of you, we are helping more families than ever through Rotary’s Christmas Basket Program. This year we adopted 83 families - a total of 312 people. Because of your generous gifts of time and money we are helping every family who was referred to us. Each of these families, and the agencies who nominated them, will know Rotarians care and are willing to support families in need. Thank you for supporting this program, and for all you do to make our community better. Merry Christmas. ~ Dan Rickard, Dale Chilcote and Steve Wade
