Nature Change

Joe Vander Meulen – Hydro-Geoscientist – “Nature Change Magazine”

This new online magazine is funded by both Community and Statewide Foundations.

Ten different non-profit organizations dedicated to the preservation of the environment:

Their mission: To inform the public relative to “how natural resources are changing” as the world is experiencing the effect of on-going “Climate Change” relevant to the temperature, air, streams, lakes, wetlands, uplands, agricultural areas, forests, and the Great Lakes,   Michigan, especially, the local environment. Everything is inter-related.

In-depth studies of our ecology including natural changes in wildlife, fish, birds, butterflies, ticks, plants, landscaping, etc. by prominent researchers, scientists have identified a variety of serious concerns and what humans can do to preserve natural surroundings.

There are many examples identified by “naturechange.org”.  Several are (1) influx of ticks (Lyme's disease), (2) Japanese Barberry bushes, (3) invasive plants & bugs (4) changing weather, (5) human ecology.  Botanist, Liana May, Leelanau Conservancy practices Phenology, the study of periodic biological phenomena of plant flowering and bird migration and how they relate or correlate with climate conditions.

The primary recommendations include the introduction of non-natural plants, bushes, wildlife immigration and behavior that invasive into the local ecology.  Japanese Barbary plants produce seeds that birds carry & spread over large areas that become invasive as they grow.

Speaker, Joe VanderMeulen, suggests that we should enjoy the outdoors, but be smart, dress proper and don’t spread or plant non-natural trees, grass or chemical products.

Rotary Civic Square Update

The original property explored for the Rotary Civic Square project, at Cass and Union is not feasible.

  • The DDA is exploring other options for the Civic Square and is optimistic a favorable site will be found.
  • At the Rotary Club board meeting on 3/25/19, the Board requested an update on the progress of the new location by June of 2019.
  • We will keep the Club members updated on the progress of the project as it unfolds.
  • Rotary Charities Board members, Eckhoff and Hickman continue to meet regularly with DDA Director Jena Derenzy to discuss the project.
Meeting Location Update
As soon as suitable alternative arrangements can be made, The Rotary Club of Traverse City will relocate our weekly to a new location.

Two weeks ago, we were informed that we are not allowed to park in the hotel parking lot and that it has always been this way.  I checked with many of our past leaders of the club and none of them were aware of such a policy.
We are being told that the parking lot is for overnight guests only and accommodating them is the hotel’s priority.  I was informed that we can park in the parking lot only if the hotel’s overnight occupancy isn’t high. We would be notified on a weekly basis.
When I spoke with the Park Place General Manager, we covered a lot of ground including;
- our long history and that fact that we helped keep this hotel open
- how they just raised out lunch rates $2 to accommodate their demand
- our meeting is only from 11:45-1:15 between check in and check out time at the hotel
- many area leaders that are members of our club hotel meetings outside of our weekly Rotary meetings at the Park Place
All of this discussion was to no avail.
After a long conversation last night at the board meeting, a unanimous vote was taken to move our meeting. Given a wide age and mobility range of our club, the board decided the ability park close to our venue is important.

I have been working with area properties that would love to have us, to find the best location. We notify you once a location has been finalized.
