President Dale Chilcote called the meeting to order. Nikki Sobkowski Led the invocation and Marlene Bevan led us in song – an ode to the Rotary Show and its closer. President Dale introduced our guests.

We were introduced to two new members: Mike Meindertsma introduced Andrew Coleman Owner of Image 360 and Maury Allen extended the family tie to a returning member, former State Representative and Senator Jason Allen. Please take time to introduce yourself to them in the next few weeks and make them feel welcome.

President Dale commended the club on their great work producing the Rotary Show…one of the best ever. A special shout out to the Chorus. Following on its heels, what will the 75^th Anniversary of the show bring next year?

Vern Gauthier offered a special thanks to all Rotarians as a Show wrap-up thank you celebrating with Rotary Appreciation Day Thursday May 12^th 11am – 2pm at Fit for You. Additionally, they are celebrating the entire week with free access to all their classes, the gym and their trainers throughout the week May 8^th-14^th. So to steal a line from the show, “get the lead out!” and take advantage of this wonderful offer.

Vern also gave a head’s up for the Annual Rotary Chair-y Festival Drill Team. Get ready for some sun and fun!

We got the official word from Marsha Smith that we have closed on and now own the Coal Dock. You can also chime in on the new name for the Dock. Upcoming meeting June 7^th will be at the Coal Dock.

Steve Haskin is signing folks up for the NMC Barbeque on Sunday May 22^nd. See Steve before or after meetings to sign up.

Special change to noon schedule: There is no meeting on May 17^th. Instead there will be a special noon meeting on Friday May 20^th for the entire district with the Polio Director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 123 Club members of the 247 members were in attendance.

 

Sharron Zimmerman welcomed us to World Community Service Month by thanking the members of the program committee and asked for our continued commitment to the financial support of our global projects. Sharron turned the mic over to Tom Petzold who introduced our speaker Dr. Joe Goertz and Dr. Tony Agrussa representing the many doctors who have built the Michigan State Medical Mission to Peru. One of the projects we began supporting last year, in addition to our interests in Polio eradication, clean water project in Haiti and elsewhere.

Dr. Goertz gave a rundown of this growing project with highlights of the depth of the issues found in the Andean jungle region that the project serves. Its early stages when the project was first founded the service was limited just to the time that these doctors could spend over three weeks. The project has grown now, to the point that there are now three Peruvian doctors who keep the temporary clinic’s efforts alive throughout the year in an attempt to maintain and stabilize the patients that have been and continue to be served.

We began our assistance funding last year, and will continue to fund this project again this year. It is a project that has shown sustainability, a key marker for our funding, and thereby warranting continued support. It is an important element of the classroom for new residential and soon to be doctors known by the name The Peru Elective at the Michigan State Medical program.

 

It is with heartfelt pain that I have to report that long time Rotarian, Howard King, passed away on Wed May 4, 2016.  Howard was an active community leader and worked closely with Rotary Charities.  He was passionate about his duty in the Marines and truly enjoyed being our club’s liaison for many incoming Coast Guard Commanders.  Howard was also a good friend and mentor to many of us.  We will hold a short memorial service on Tuesday May 10^th at our Rotary meeting to say goodbye to our friend and fellow Rotarian.

LIKELY KNOWS -  My first job out of college (as a Dance Major) was for an Engineering Co. where we worked on Chrysler’s PT Cruiser line down in the Detroit area in 1999. Talk about an eye opening experience to the auto-biz! Plus, we had martini lunches, so life as a new "working girl" wasn't too bad. 

 

LIFE ROLE MODEL –Pop (a.k.a. Dr. David Martin) – my father is renaissance man. He has saved 100’s of lives through his career as an Infectious Disease Specialist in Traverse City, served in the Coast Guard earlier in his career, has been a loving and supporting husband father to the “Martin Women”, and is an accomplished musician, and artist. He has traveled the world, he is extremely well read, and has always been a strong advocate for human rights, as well as an environmentalist. He is a life-long learner, and every day I strive to be more like him.

 

MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT –Being a mother for a period of my life, and teaching Jeff Haas to dance. Man that cat has moves!

 

PROUDEST MOMENT -When a patient or physician hugs me after I interview them for media segments, and tell me how comfortable I made them feel. So many people are nervous to be on camera, let alone talking about personal health information. I’m glad I put them at ease, and they end up feeling they had a rewarding experience by participating in an interview that helps to educate our community on health topics. 

 

FUNNIEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU – I woke up one day this fall and the calendar read: 15th year at Munson...and then I realized it wasn't a dream!

 

SECRET AMBITION - To leave TC, and travel the world training to be a professional ballroom dancer, and compete in national and global dance competitions...and win! 

Or, to dance with or for our older population or retirement communities in TC, as a full time job. 

 

I'd love to be my grandfather, Bill Earley. He was the Assistant Head Coach to Coach Leahy in the late 40's, for the University of Notre Dame football team. He also played for ND in college. GO IRISH!
