On behalf of TCHS staff and students, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your long-standing support of the summer work study program. It has been clear that students enjoy the summer program and benefit from the ability to earn income and academic credit. As I have been learning about the many aspects of CLC and the summer program, it is obvious that the support of Rotary STRIVE Committee and the Murchie Endowment have played a critical and pivotal role in making the summer work-study program possible.
The work-study program this summer will focus on service-learning, community service, and student wellness. The academic component will focus on math and science. We will be doing volunteer work with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Cherryland Humane Society, Reining Liberty Ranch, Habitat for Humanity, Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear Dune, Goodwill and beach clean up in the Traverse City area. Service projects at TCHS include revitalizing the Maverick Mile, classroom painting, and general outdoor grounds cleaning and upkeep. Wellness education and activities include mindfulness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, that will be done in conjunction with the Traverse City Youth Health and Wellness Center as well as the Teen Cuisine program with MSU Extension Office. Enrichment will include hiking, kayaking and working in several art mediums with Black Bird Art.
The summer program will be in session for six weeks, Tuesday, June 12th through Thursday, July 19th. Students will be working a total of 23 days, four day per week for five hours per day.
