Get to know this Rotarian: George Powell

Current occupation? I own an importing company specializing in dried fruits, edible seeds and nuts. We import and distribute across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

How long have you been a Rotarian? I joined in 1992, so 29 years. My Father and my Grandfather were both Rotarians in Marion, Indiana.

What made you interested in joining Rotary? I wanted a way to meet and engage with the community. Rotary has given me that opportunity and I have enjoyed getting to know so many great people in our town and wonderful projects in the area.

What do you love the most about Rotary? I enjoy the people, but I love the 4-way test. If more people in the world thought about: is it the truth, is it fair, will it build goodwill and will it beneficial to all, we would have a better world to live in.

What has been your favorite program or volunteer opportunity with Rotary to participate in? I have participated in almost every possible program, but having the honor to serve as president of the club was extremely special.

What keeps you with Rotary? The other Rotarians and I still learn new, exciting things about our community on a regular basis.

What are you currently reading? Just started 2034: A Novel of the Next World War. Elliot Ackerman/James Stavridis.

What are you currently watching? I have been enjoying the US Open. There have been some very good matches this year.

What is a fun fact about you? I think most Rotarians know, but I have been playing pickleball for more than 35 years here in Traverse City. I am probably a bit slower than I used to be, but I still think I can play a good game.
