Get to know this Rotarian: Charlie Hamlyn
Current occupation? Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Grand Traverse County. I’ve been with the office since 2013.
How long have you been a Rotarian? I joined Rotary in October 2020. I’m part of the ‘zoom’ class.
What made you interested in joining Rotary? I had been looking to join a community service organization for some time. My job is in the public service realm, but I wanted a way to give back to the community in a broader way. Rotary touches on so many aspects of the community and is such a driving force in the area that it seemed like a great opportunity. And what better time than a global pandemic to take the plunge?!
What do you love the most about Rotary? The people involved in Rotary. Every week is an opportunity to meet people who have a different, but important impact on the community. It’s really nice to be able to attend meetings in-person and sit down and share a meal/conversation with folks from diverse fields.
What has been your favorite program or volunteer opportunity with Rotary to participate in? I’m very excited to be a part of the Rotary Charities Grant Review Team. COVID has really limited opportunities to get involved during my first year, but I’m looking forward to helping out as much as possible.
What are you currently reading? The Volunteer by Jack Fairweather. It’s about a Polish resistance fighter who sought to get captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz during World War II, so that he could report back on the camp.
What are you currently watching? Anything sports-related. And Ted Lasso -- Ted’s positivity and kindness have been a great inspiration over the last year and a half.
What is a fun fact about you? I was in the Marine Corps from 2002-2007. I attained the rank of Captain and deployed twice to Iraq. 9/11 happened just as I started my senior year at U of M. That event changed the trajectory of my life--hard to believe that it was 20 years ago.
We are always looking for new members to join us. At the Rotary Club of TC, all are welcome. For more info or to join rotary, visit: https://www.traversecityrotary.org/
